This decisive stance, led by The Principal Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment, comes in response to growing concerns over the adverse effects of paraquat on human and animal health, soil quality and the overall environment. The principal secretary, at the forefront of this initiative, penned a compelling letter to the Secretary of the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India. In this communication, he highlig hted compelling evidence against Paraquat, drawing attention to reports from the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT). These reports expose the herbicide's toxicity, signaling a potential threat to human health, coupled with a dearth of comprehensive scientific research to fully comprehend its impact. Further intensifying the urgency, the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) provided alarming statistics. Out of 149 recorded Paraquat poisoning cases between 2017 and 2019, a staggering 140 resulted in fatalities. This grim reality has prompted a strong call for a permanent ban on the herbicide. District Collectors and Chief District Agriculture Officers from over 15 districts in Odisha have also joined the chorus, painting a disturbing picture of the herbicide's consequences. Nayagarh district, in particular, has witnessed a troubling surge in farmer deaths linked to Paraquat poisoning in 2023, underscoring the need for urgent intervention. This disturbing trend is not an isolated incident but rather a reflection of a broader issue affecting communities across the state. The government's stand against Paraquat is not solely based on statistics and reports. Numerous complaints and proposals from various stakeholders further reinforce the pressing need for swift and decisive action. The Odisha government's commitment to the health and well-being of its citizens, farmers, and the environment is evident in this resolute move to ban Paraquat.
