GENETIC ENGINEERING

 GENETIC ENGINEERING

Through Genetic engineering one can modify the characters of an organism by manipulation of its genetic material. It comes under the broad heading of biotechnology. Genetic engineering involve extracting the DNA out of one organism, changing it using chemicals or radiation and subsequently putting it back into the same or different organism. One can also study how traits and characteristics are transmitted through the generations and how genetic disorders are caused. The research in the field involves inquiring into the cause and discovering potential remedies. Genetic engineering in plants and animals is to improve certain natural characteristics of value, to increase resistance to disease or damage, to develop new characteristics etc. It is used to change the color, size, texture etc of plants also known as( Genetically Modified ) GM foods. Genetic engineering in humans can correct severe hereditary defects.

To become a Genetic engineer, one must have a graduate or postgraduate degree in genetics or related fields like biotechnology, molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry or PhD from recognized university. Research in modern medicine and medical technology requires more trained personnel in biotechnology and genetic engineering. Genetic engineers are mainly employed in medical and pharmaceutical industries, agricultural sector, teachers, research and development departments of the government and private sectors.
